Record the face of Chinese scientific development during the War of Resistance Against Japan

Author: Yin Xiaodong (Professor of Capital Normal University)
The study of modern scientific and technological history pays more attention to original materials such as archives, letters, diaries, and manuscripts. The photos are precious. However, because the photos are scattered and scarce, they can often be used as auxiliary materials.Especially under the hard conditions of the Anti -Japanese War, there are very few image materials reserved by science and education institutions. As a diplomat who was ordered to come to China during the war, Li Joseph used a rare camera in China from 1943 to 1946. He took cultural relics and science and education star fires that were flowing in the countryside in China. There were more than 1,400 photos.Mr. Qian Linzhao, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, once said that Li Joseph’s “Science Pattern” and “Chinese Science” were a powerful record of the overall appearance of Chinese science during the Anti -Japanese War.Both books were selected from a large number of field photos, of which 60 were used in “Science Patins”, and 95 “Science of China” used, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.
“Battle of Chinese Science” in “Joseph Joseph” Liu Xiao [British] John Mofte with Hunan Education Press
With the launch of the Cambridge University Library and the Lee Joseph Research Institute, the original photos taken by Li Joseph have been digitized and became a treasure of the history of scientific education during the study of the Anti -Japanese War.Many papers or works on the history of characters and institutional history have been taken by Joseph. For example, when I studied Hu Ganshan (academic consultants who used to be the Sino -British Science Cooperation Museum), Yu Ruizheng, Jiang Renshou and other scientists, I found a photo taken by Li Joseph, which became an important clue to supplement his academic career; andFor example, when I was studying Li Joseph and members of the British aid association, I saw members Luo Zhongshu (Professor of West China Union University) under the lens of Li Joseph. These precious photos not only make their family feel, but also attracted the attention of research institutions such as the History Museum of Wuhan University. This group of photos is finally published. The system reflects the situation of my country’s science and education institutions and scientific educators during the War of Resistance Against Japan.
Because there are many repetitions in the original photos, and some of the film are also damaged, more than 900 photos were selected in this book.Except for some photos given by some friends, such as the 23 photos of the Tiaoyuan Electrical Plant given by Wu Yunchu, and the 12 photos of Yan’an University presented by Lin Boqu, most of the remaining are taken by Lee Joseph, which is also the reason why Li Joseph himself rarely appears in the photo. These photos are rich in content and eclectic, and are discharged into changing agile layouts, with text narratives, giving readers a good visual impact and reading experience.
Following Le Joseph’s lens, we were able to cross 80 years ago and examine the science of Chinese war from the perspective of Li Joseph as the “head of science and cultural cooperation”, including nearly 300 institutions such as scientific research institutions, medical systems, and industrial enterprises.Among them, there are both students who focus on experiments in college classrooms, as well as huts living by scholars next to the Yunnan -Myanmar highway. The most striking is the scientists in the work scene, all of which show their positive optimism.Such as Zhong Shengbiao in the microscope, Zhang Jixi, who watched Yanjing, Zou Yixin, who recorded astronomical data, and Zhu Kezhen, who presided over the Chinese scientific and social discussion. It is more that scientists stand in front of the workplace. Many scientists have experience in studying abroad, but behind they are old temples and humble huts. This contrast allows readers to have an intuitive understanding of the scientific situation of that era. There are also a large number of architectural and landscape photos in the photo. Li Joseph likes to visit various temples. On the one hand, many science and education institutions are temporarily located here. On the one hand, it helps to think about the source of the ideology of Chinese civilization.Modern contrast and connection. There are many photos of scenery and ordinary people in the book. These historical researchers often ignore the content, but they often occupy the entire cross -page when typing.Travelers can always show the customs and customs of that era from an unexpected perspective, and also make this book full of historical temperature.
The narrative of this book is also different from the ancient science and technology research of Li Joseph, but it focuses on the main content of the modern technology itself, that is, these photos.Joseph’s diplomat identity is exactly suitable for this task.As the author said, if we send a scientific and technological historian today to return to the war, the collected information is not necessarily more complete than Joseph. It should be said that in the face of vast scientific history data, Li Joseph is the core figure. This writing path is a simplification of the previous biography structure.
Using the perspective from point to the line, the author pointed out that the timing and intentions of Li Joseph have obviously been thoroughly designed, with both space differences and choices in the opportunity. At the beginning of the coming in China, Li Joseph followed resources such as the cities of science and education center, southwest and northwest, and industrial and mining enterprises; the Anti -Japanese War entered the final stage, Li Joseph’s close stare at the southeast war and southwest counterattack.; By the end of the Anti -Japanese War, Li Joseph went to the north and the east cities, and was undoubtedly thinking about the future development of Chinese science.Several routes are like a large network, which outlines Joseph’s scientific outlook, that is, science is not only in scientists and laboratories of educational scientific research institutions, but also the channels for infrastructure construction and economic development, mobilization and contribution of wartime sciences, international assistance and cooperation.Mechanisms, etc., greatly broaden the scientific concepts we usually understand.
Author Liu Xiao and Mover have worked hard for more than ten years to interpret the information of nearly a thousand photos, including the identification of characters, buildings, institutions, and analysis of the report of the Lichew Survey route. In all aspects of wartime science, a clear framework structure is established, which will definitely promote the study of the history of modern Chinese science.
For the first time, the book fully reproduces what Li Joseph’s hearing during the war, showing the spiritual style of Chinese scientists and scholars in a very difficult situation, and the spiritual style of string songs.solid foundation.
